The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has recently issued Version 3 of the Workboat Code, bringing in updated compliance regulations for commercial workboats and pilot vessels.
In response, I.C. Brindle & Co Ltd has published the Workboat Code 3 Training Manual – 5th Edition, replacing the earlier 4th Edition based on Workboat Code 2. This latest manual is designed to help operators stay fully compliant with the new standards.
The training manual is comprised of approximately 120 pages in a ring binder
🔹 Vessels under 24 metres engaged in commercial operations at sea
🔹 Purpose-built pilot boats of any size (suitable for both inland and offshore use)
🔹 Craft carrying cargo, or up to 12 passengers and/or industrial personnel
🔹 UK-registered vessels operating worldwide, and non-UK vessels in UK territorial waters
🔹 Remotely operated unmanned vessels with keels laid on or after 13th December 2023
Continuing the practical approach of earlier versions, our loose-leaf manual is fully structured around the requirements of Workboat Code 3. Each section corresponds with the relevant parts of the Code, including newly mandated detail on lifesaving appliances (LSA) and their associated procedures—now featured in the 5th Edition.
To help ensure full compliance, the final section allows operators to input vessel-specific information, with straightforward guidance included. The loose-leaf design also means updates can be made easily whenever needed.
